Plagiarism can be intentional or by accident, but either one is a crime. In my ENC 1101 class we did a project on different media, most people choosing to focus on an artist's song. Many of the students in my class used something like "song guru" to get in depth explanations of the song, and changed the words of that author but still had the exact same idea. That is still plagiarism and those people had to go through a separate conference on plagiarism and do an entirely new project. That is a light punishment. People can be sued, kicked out of school, you name it. All it takes to avoid the punishments is to put an acknowledgements at the end of your projects, and for most teachers in my past they would include the acknowledgements in the word count so it we would want to list every single source we used. Moral of the story: if you read an article and use their words, or even idea, just put a little bullet at the end of your essay.
