Project 2 Draft 1
About a week ago, February 27th, 2017, my dad had open heart surgery on the same day his father died of a heart problem. Before the surgery, I had the thought of becoming a doctor, but I never knew which kind because even though I had a calling to help people I didn’t know how to do it. Now, after its all said and done with the community I want to be apart of is the cardiology community in Pensacola. My grandfather was a heart surgeon, and my dad was just saved by one along with my other grandfather. The genre I would be working with would be the heart, and the text is heart surgery. The specific thing I want to be doing.
Cardiology according to Mariam Webster is “the branch of medicine that deals with diseases and abnormalities in the heart”. I get to look forward to diving in to that definition not only because I want to be apart of the medicine side of the cardiology community but because doctors are almost certain that I will be a patient of heart disease in the future. Genetics don’t lie and on my dad’s side, He had a quadruple bypass and his father died of a heart aneurysm. On my mom’s side, her father had seven stints put in his heart by my other grandfather when he was still practicing. All of this puts an emphasis on my drive for the education of cardiology.
When I first began to interview my grandmother, she told me her experience with the whole situation in our family. She said “Evan, I didn’t want to tell you this before his surgery, but February 27th has been the worst day of the year for me for 13 years. Now it is the best.” I was very confused when she said the worst day, so I asked why. She said “Febuary 27th, 2004 your grandfather died. I tried to get them to move the surgery but there was no other time.” She cried a little after that but when she collected herself I asked her what it was like to be a heart surgeon, and she said “It’s having confidence that you are the best around, and will save your patient and his family from what we have gone through.” I stopped it there. I realized then and there this was definitely the community I wanted to be a part of, and I knew exactly who to ask about it.
A family friend of mine is the cardiologist my dad used. He said “Genre? it’s hearts. We work all day long with people like your dad, and its a specialty in the medical field. As for the text, it’s a surgeon or a cardiologist. That defines who we are.”. The reason I am drawn towards this community is because of my urge to help people. And the doctor made it very clear that if all I wanted was the money, I should look the other way. TC Holidays says that being a cardiologist is so much more than fixing hearts, it’s making bonds and getting people to trust you, it is helping people prevent cardiac problems not just treating them.
My whole life I have gotten told that my grandfather was the best heart surgeon Pensacola has ever seen, and how they saved one of the countless family members who needed a stint or bypass. He was known for doing it fast. A triple bypass can take 6 hours, he did it in two and a half and only losing one patient and even that was on the table. Being a part of the same community, or even getting a chance to live up to the family name, and helping people so they don't have to go through the same thing as my family makes me dream of being a part of the cardiology community in Pensacola.
